Affiliate Marketing – What is it?

December 27, 2009 by ptlae

Affiliate marketing has many descriptions, yet all mean the same. Affiliate marketing is a major business on the web. It is a cooperative between a merchant and an affiliate’s efforts. For many years, affiliate marketing has proven to be a profitable, calculated plan of producing long-term rewards. It has become famous for Internet sites who are trying to add additional income for their pages. Every day, people get interested in affiliate marketing and desire to make money using it. But in most cases, these new marketers do not fully understand the affiliate universe and make costly mistakes. Stated differently, affiliate marketing has often been misunderstood.

One common misconception being associated with affiliate marketing is “selling”, although selling is an important activity of the affiliate marketer and the main purpose of a business system. Also is that affiliate marketing is associated with “advertising”. While the significance of advertising in marketing certain merchandise is not to be considered unimportant, the fact of the matter is, advertising like selling, is merely a part of the many functions of marketing.

In affiliate marketing, an affiliate is compensated for every visitor, subscriber and/or customer provided through his links. The mentioned compensation could be made based on a certain value for each visit. The most attractive aspect of affiliate marketing from the merchant’s position is that no payment is due to an affiliate until results are achieved.

Affiliate marketing is usually being run by affiliate networks and these affiliate communities are consiting of two functional bodies, the group of affiliates and the group of suppliers. Each has their special function and role when talking about affiliate marketing. The affiliate network acts as a third party between the supplier and the associated affiliates. The network provides the technology to deliver the merchant’s campaigns and offers. The affiliate network also recieves payment from the merchant and then distribute payments to the affiliates.

Affiliate marketing is a great proposition for both the supplier and the marketer. If they are willing to work together, there are advantages to both. Plus the fact that it makes sense, it is easy and cheap way to start. You can be up and running within a short time.
